There were 1,000 MAiD deaths in 2016 in Canada. Now there are 13,000 or more a year, and 5% of all deaths annually are from MAiD in Canada.
In 2021 a law passed to expand MAiD to include mental illness, including suicidality, and does not require that other treatments have been tried. The law is set to take effect in 2027 and would be particularly devastating to people with disabilities as it potentially devalues their lives and promotes a culture of ableism.
It’s not our role to choose when we die, to play God with life and death. Just as when we are brought into this world is not something we can control, when we are taken from it is also not to be our choice, but rather to be entrusted to God’s good timing.
Much of this perspective relates to a Christian approach to suffering and suffering with Christ, so we encourage you to listen to our message on that HERE: https://www.oceansidecommunitychurch.ca/podcasts/messages/2025-10-19-death-grief-

If our goal in life is to avoid suffering at all costs, then we can see why MAiD makes sense. But that’s not a Christian worldview. If we see meaning, purpose, and even value in suffering, then we won’t fear or avoid it. Furthermore, if we believe that all life is precious to God and of great worth, no matter a person’s physical or mental condition, then we will seek to preserve that life.
The potential expansion of MAiD to persons with disabilities as well as to teens and children should greatly concern Christians. In fact, even non-Christians who advocate for people with disabilities are opposed to this expansion, as this article here explains: https://policyoptions.irpp.org/2024/04/maid-free-health-care/
We need to learn to care for and support those with mental or physical illness—that is true compassion—not find easier ways for them to die. They are not an inconvenience to us or to society.
